Upper School Foreign Language
The goals of the Department of Foreign Languages at Lake Ridge Academy are for students to acquire the four language skills - listening, speaking, reading and writing - at various levels of proficiency; to develop the ability in students to communicate with people of other cultures in their language; to give students through travel the opportunity to have direct contact with native people in the target language, so that they appreciate the contribution that these people have made to history, the arts, literature and their established institutions; for students to acquire a better understanding of the English language and the U.S. culture through comparison with other languages and cultures; to stimulate the curiosity and the imagination of students and motivate them to become life long learners by continuing the study of languages beyond high school to full proficiency. Lake Ridge Academy offers the study of both French and Spanish. In the lower school instruction begins in the kindergarten and continues through the fifth grade. When students enter the sixth grade, they continue their study of French or Spanish. Successful completion of the eighth grade level gives them one (1) upper school credit. Lake Ridge Academy strongly encourages students to go beyond the basic requirement and study one or more languages to complete fluency. To graduate from Lake Ridge Academy, students have to fulfill a three (3) year language requirement in either French or Spanish. They also have the opportunity to study more than one language beyond the basic requirements, all the way to the Advanced Placement Level.
