Many factors make athletics a vital part of life at Lake Ridge Academy, including great coaches, our school’s small size, a strong sense of team, high levels of participation and enthusiasm, and dedication to winning interscholastic competitions. In fact, 70 percent of our students participate in our interscholastic sports program—a number considerably above the national norm.

As our students will attest, there’s a place for almost everyone on our teams, ensuring opportunities to play, compete, and gain experience. Our students will also tell you that the benefits of participating in sports go far beyond the playing field. Sports fosters characteristics important in the classroom and in life, including teamwork, leadership, self-control, trust, sportsmanship, loyalty, and confidence. In addition, we work with students to ensure that their focus remains balanced and that the desire to compete and win doesn’t interfere with maintaining high academic standards.

There’s another benefit to participating in athletics. Excelling at sports can work to an athlete’s advantage in terms of college admission. In The Game of Life, by James Shuman and former Princeton President William Bowen, the authors demonstrate how athletic prowess is the single-most powerful nonacademic factor in the admissions process—a factor that goes well beyond other considerations, including minority and legacy.
