The Honors Environmental Science class recently competed in a solar house competition. Students were asked to build a house containing both active and passive solar components. The goal was to build a house that stays cool during the summer and warms up during the day and retains heat at night during the winter. Three different models were constructed using numerous materials including foam board, stones, plexi glass, granite tile and wood. Students were encouraged to scrounge materials, but no member of any team was permitted to spend more than fifty dollars on building materials. The model was tested to determine its ability to use solar energy and was judged on aesthetics by Ann Bort , Dr. Elizabeth Glor, Teresa Jenkins, and Carol Klimas. The “Tool Box” house placed first in summer temperatures while the “Donna Reed” house placed first in winter temperatures. The “Tiki Hut” received first place for its aesthetic appeal.
