A celebration of the past...the present...and the future!

VARSITY AND JUNIOR VARSITY JETS TEAMS WIN NATIONALS

Lake Ridge Academy celebrates the dual successes of its Varsity and Junior Varsity JETS TEAMS. Both groups placed first in the national TEAMS 2002 competition. TEAMS 2002 (Tests of Engineering, Aptitude, Mathematics and Science) program is the 23rd annual competition sponsored by JETS (Junior Engineering and Technology Society), a non-profit educational organization that promotes high school student interest in math, science and engineering.

A one-day, two-part regional academic competition took place in February. Lake Ridge Academy teams, comprised of eight students each, worked cooperatively within their respective groups to problem solve real world problems, using an open-book, open-note, open-discussion format. Part I of the exam is a series of objective multiple-choice questions related to various engineering situations. Part II requires students to describe and defend their solutions to open-end subjective questions related to problems from Part I.

Scores from Part I of the exam were sent to the state level. Lake Ridge Academy's top scoring state results qualified the school for nationals. Based on results from Part II both Lake Ridge teams emerged in first place in their respective divisions at the national level. There were nine divisions, determined by the size of the school, selective process of the school, and size of the senior class.
