On March 8, 2002, Lake Ridge Academy hosted
a humanities symposium featuring the work of area high school
students. Attendees to the "Humanity In Action: Changing
the World" gathering included five schools: Laurel School
(Shaker Heights, OH), Grand River (Austinburg, OH), Hathaway
Brown School (Shaker Heights, OH), Wellington High School
(Wellington, OH) and Lake Ridge Academy.
Students from these schools shared their papers
prepared on various topics pertaining to the role of humanities
in our world. In addition to the student presentations and
discussions, David Forte, a professor from Cleveland State
University, was the keynote speaker, addressing humanities
and foreign relations with his speech entitied "Natural
Law: A Philosopgy for all Ages."
The humanities include many fields of study
such as history, anthropology, literature, languages, philosopy
and ethics. Synthesizing these disciplines, students bring
meaning to current cultural and political events. This exchange
and analysis of ideas will help students begin to address
the challenges we face in the post-September 11 world.
