senior Jonathan Stout
submitted one of seven winning plays in the
2002 Young Playwrights Festival National Playwriting Competition.
The scripts were selected from over 1,100 entrees from across
the country. Junior Mike Riffle
was a semifinalist in the competition. Of
the twenty-five semifinalist plays, five were written by either
Jon or Mike.
The winning writers arrive in New York City
on June 8th for nine days of intensive writing sessions, workshops,
and seminars with New York theater artists. In addition, the
young dramatists will attend Broadway's and off-Broadway's
hottest shows, followed by after-play discussions with members
of the creative teams.
The week concludes with stage readings of the
winning plays. From these readings, program representatives
will select pieces to be produced in the fall at the Young
Playwrights Festival held at the Cherry Lane Alternative Theatre
in New York.
The playwriting contest is a product of Young
Playwrights Inc., a 20-year old creation of Stephen Sondheim
to introduce young people to writing for the professional
theater and encourage self-expression through playwriting.
