Physical Education and Health
The goals of the Physical Education Department
are:

to help the student gain an understanding of the basic principles
of total fitness and to develop an appreciation for fitness
through properly planned personalized activities; |

to help the student acquire
skill and knowledge in using his/her body, as well as mastery
of skills in a variety of sports; |
| |
to foster social responsibility,
good sportsmanship, and a sense of fair play through a respect
for rules of the game and other participants; |
| |
to develop self-awareness
of personal capabilities concerning skills and fitness levels
to promote a positive self-image; |
| |
to provide for physical and
recreational needs and to develop a desire for participation
in lifetime recreational activities. |
Physical Education [830]
(full year; .5 credit; 2 sessions per cycle)
A variety of activities are taught in four- to six-week units: fitness
training, flag football, Frisbee games, soccer, volleyball, badminton,
team handball, tennis, golf, track and field, floor hockey and archery.
Required for students in grades 9 and 10.
Active participation in a team sport may replace
physical education classes. Students who begin a team sport partway
through a quarter must, however, complete that quarter in P.E. Competitive
teams are offered in golf, tennis, volleyball, basketball, field
hockey, soccer, baseball, softball, and track and field.
Health [865]
(full year; .5 credit; 2 sessions per cycle)
This course provides accurate and current information on a variety
of topics including: substance abuse, human sexuality, fitness and
holistic health, nutrition, mental health, stress, and first aid
training. Since the health-related topics all require personal choices,
emphasis is placed on decision-making and values clarification skills.
Required for students in grade 9.
