About

Giving Back to the Community

Led by Middle School Teachers Lisa McElwain and Jennifer Calkins, Community Action Projects are student-created projects that focus on making change around an issue they are passionate about. We know that middle school students are interested in their world and its challenges, and they want to be able to make positive changes. However, they often feel too young to be able to make much of a difference. We also know that when young people participate in their community, they bring valuable perspectives to issues, and they can play an active role in improving and shaping their futures. We want our students to find an issue they are passionate about, and then work to find a way to make improvements or bring awareness to that issue. They will work with members of our school community, as well as the wider community to figure out how they can improve the world around them.
