Elizabeth Coble '18 and Noah Kawaguchi '18 were recently awarded National Merit Scholarships from the colleges that they will be attending this fall. They join a group of 7,500 National Merit Scholarship winners who were selected from a pool of 15,000 finalists. Elizabeth Coble is attending The University of Chicago and Noah Kawaguchi is attending Oberlin College and Conservatory this fall.
Last fall, Lake Ridge Academy announced five National Merit Semifinalists and later announced four finalists from the Class of 2018. With a class of only 50 graduates, this is a tremendous achievement!
The National Merit Scholarship program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarship funds that began in 1955. About 1.6 million juniors entered the program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. The top scores in critical reading, mathematics and writing skills advance only 16,000 students to the Semifinalist list, which represents less than 1% of the nation’s top high school seniors. Finalists are selected by reviewing the student’s academic record, written essay, participation in school and community activities, evidence of leadership and any other honors or awards received.
